My Story

Hey friends

Over the course of my Team Bianca journey, I’ve shared a number of stories of quotes Bianca had saved in her phone. For example, last year, it was Sir Winston Churchill, the former British Prime Minister who said “Attitude is that little thing that makes a huge difference.” This was very relevant to Bianca, particularly the tremendous attitude she showed in her fight against Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

Unfortunately, as most of you know, Bianca lost her six week battle in October 2013.

Since then, my mother Jo-Ann and I have spent a lot of time running Team Bianca. With the support of so many incredibly generous family members, friends, businesses and kind strangers, we have now raised over $190,000 since 2014, all in memory of Bianca. These funds have supported children with rare diseases through the Steve Waugh Foundation and contributed significantly towards tremendous rare disease research by the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

In 2017, for the final time as a part of Team Bianca, I’ll be taking part in the City2Surf to raise funds that will further support the research efforts of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead into children and young people with rare diseases.

Many of you will also remember another quote of Bianca’s I shared, being Dory’s line in Finding Nemo, "You know what you have to do when life gets you down? Just keep swimming." In the past, I’ve spoken about this as something Bianca drew upon in her battle. She just kept swimming. What many people didn’t know was that when Bianca was younger, she was also an incredible swimmer. While we swam and trained together for a few years, she always won more medals. Given this quote (and Bianca’s superior swimming ability), it is only fitting that I finish my Team Bianca journey with a swim, namely the 2.5km Sunshine Coast Spring Swim at Mooloolaba Beach, Queensland.

I’d be incredibly appreciative if you can help me help The Children’s Hospital at Westmead by giving whatever you can by using the 'Give Now' button. Donations $2 and over are tax deductible. In return for every $25 you generously donate, you will receive an entry into the Team Bianca - City2Surf Charity Raffle. With this year’s prize pool containing over 85 prizes and a total value of $15,000, a donation gives you an awesome opportunity to win some awesome prizes. You’ll also get the satisfaction of knowing that as a result of my (lack of) physical condition, I’ll find both a 14km run and a 2.5km swim difficult.

Thank you for coming along with me on this Team Bianca fundraising journey over the past four years. It has meant more to me than you could ever imagine.

Daniel

Over the past three years Team Bianca has raised over $170,000 to help young people with rare diseases. During 2015-2016 $90,000 was raised for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, funding research into rare heart diseases and blood disorders like HLH.

In 2014, we also raised over $78,000 for the Steve Waugh Foundation to provide grants to those aged 0-22 who are living with rare diseases.

For the fourth consecutive year, we are running the City2Surf in memory of Bianca Caltabiano, a wonderful daughter, sister and friend, who passed away in October 2013 at the age of 18.

Close to 2 million Australians will have a rare disease at some stage during their lives, of which 400,000 will be children.

Bianca was diagnosed with haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare cancer-like blood disorder of the immune system. HLH primarily affects children but is often diagnosed in teenagers, adolescents and adults. Some cases are genetic but HLH may also be triggered by viral infections such as glandular fever (EBV virus), vaccinations or other underlying autoimmune disorders and cancers. Bianca had undergone treatment which involved blood transfusions, steroids, immunosuppressants and chemotherapy. Sadly due to pneumonia, kidney and respiratory failure, our beloved Bianca passed away.

We are calling on friends, family and businesses to sponsor our team to further build upon the hospital’s current research efforts. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and all money raised will assist in funding vital research projects into rare diseases conducted by the Hospital so that young lives like Bianca’s are not lost.

For every $25 you donate to Team Bianca, you will receive an entry into the Team Bianca Charity Prize Draw to win great prizes from our sponsors. For more chances to win, once you have donated go to http://bit.ly/2pIcfmv where you can support our sponsors and receive bonus entries into the Prize Draw.

We thank you all for your generosity and support. Let’s continue to do Bianca proud.
