My dear uncle Marco died of cancer on the 11th of May this year. I will be running the City to Surf 14 kilometre / 8.7 miles race, which takes place in Sydney in August each year, in his memory. I began training a couple of weeks ago and am meant to go for five runs a week, although the 30 degree heat in London has made this a bit difficult this week.
I am raising money for the Oncology ward at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. All the funds I raise will go towards something very unglamorous that would make a huge difference to the lives of cancer patients at the hospital: two good commodes (basically movable loos). The ones that are there are quite humiliating to use and the nurses agree that replacements are long overdue. Professor Zoltan Endre, who treated my uncle, has sent me a quote for a pair of new ones, which come to a total sum of $2070 (about £1242). If I hit my target, the loos will be inscribed with the message Marco penned himself: "Enjoy this comfortable crap courtesy of me, Mark Colvin."
Thank you for your support,
A day and a half after sending out this link, two loos for Colvin have been paid for. I have been so moved by the generosity and kind messages of everyone who has donated. Please do continue to donate if you have not yet had the chance; all funds over and above the $2070 that has funded the two loos will go towards other essential equipment at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
