Ten years ago my husband Stan Zemanek, sadly lost his battle with brain cancer. How do you say goodbye to someone you’ve shared over 30 years with? On the morning he took his last breath, I thought how lucky I was to have been loved by this very special man, whose last words to me were “Have a good time.”
When Stan was first diagnosed, I knew nothing about brain cancer. I didn’t know it kills more children than any other disease in Australia. Or that it kills more people under 40 than any other cancer. Over these ten years, I’ve met too many people who – like Stan – have lost their battle with brain cancer. I’ve seen how it affects everyone involved, it devastates families and it breaks hearts.
This year in his memory I will walk the City2Surf with my daughter, Gaby. At first, I wanted to raise $800 for brain cancer research, advocacy and awareness. But now, thanks to Ben Fordham on 2GB and his generous listeners, I am daring to raise much, much more. In fact, I am daring greatly.
So please, help me honour Stan’s memory and donate to help people living with brain cancer.
